Problems with roads:
Poor Condition:
60% of roads are in poor condition. Sustaining deteriorating roads costs more over time than maintaining roads in good conditions. Reconstruction can cost up to three times as more as preservation treatments.
Traffic:
The amount of growth in traffic has surpassed highway construction. From 1990 to 2007 the amount of miles drive jumped more than 41 percent. This increase puts pressure on already aging roads.
Costs:
Asphalt, concrete, and steel prices have went up a significant percent. These costs have depleted state’s resources for construction project. Highway maintenance needs exceeds the amount of funds that there are actually available.
Freight Truck Traffic:
The amount of traffic of trucks a day is wearing on the 50 year old interstate highway system.
Age, weather, and moisture also cause roads to deteriorate. Roads eventually wear out due to age. Water damage and poor drainage contribute to cracks, ruts, potholes, and foundation deterioration. Pavement stress is also an issue with durability of roads. [4]
