Types of Road Materials

Types of Road Materials:
The two most common materials roads are constructed out of are asphalt and concrete.  Some less popular materials are brick and gravel.  When choosing what material to use traffic, weather, and cost all have to be taken into account.
Asphalt, or asphalt concrete is most often used on high traffic roads. Here is a tutorial on how asphalt is made:

Similar to asphalt is asphalt aggregate.  This is made up the asphalt material along with sand, gravel, crushed stone, and slag.  This adds strength and foundation to roads.  This method is also environmentally friendly because recycled aggregate can be used often.  This helps to conserve natural resources.
One of the lesser common types of roads are earth roads.  These are made from gravel and aggregate materials.  There a good for low traffic areas.  An alternative for this is a “tar and chip” method.  This method the earth roads are mixed with sticky binders to be held together better.  This material needs to be continuously maintained, which forces transportation departments to use more money.
